Interesting to note though that a. these “minority districts” are now defined much more broadly, including influence and coalition districts, b. this hasn’t necessarily led to equitable numbers of people of Color in Congress, and c. this growth started under Reagan. Confused? Good.
There are so many social issues that are stripped of federal protection because individual states should decide. I’m from California, my state happens to be pretty liberal, and we’re really into the idea of ballot initiatives anyway (see: Prop 19, Prop 187, Prop 8), so there’s definitely a lot of voter input in the way the state government is run. Theoretically, I should be stoked about the idea of Big Jerry being the boss of me instead of the congressional Hegemony Mafia being all up in my business. Honestly though, I’ve only seen the “state government” stand in for “the voice of the people” in ways that restrict human rights. Just saying.

WE SO EXCITED.
Our problem, our difficulty, is in you thinking that I should, in fact, feel some shame about my homosexuality. Our quarrel is that I refuse to share your shame with you.

President Obama Speaks Out On Trayvon Martin of the Day: In stark contrast to Geraldo Rivera’s stunningly callous victim-blaming, President Obama this morning delivered a powerful statement of support for Trayvon Martin’s parents in response to a question about the ongoing investigation.
“When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids,” the president said. “I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this… You know, if I had a son he’d look like Trayvon.”

now that tim wise writes abt trayvon martin, 2520s will feel “included” yet essentially still miss the point of how bodies of Color are not valued.
